In Memoriam
Our Veterinarians
Dr. John D. Freed
Veterinarian, 1942–2021
Dr. Freed founded Freed Veterinary Hospital on August 6, 1973, after graduating from Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He served as President of the Tidewater Veterinary Medical Association, the Greater Peninsula Veterinary Medical Association, and as the Peninsula Representative to the Virginia Veterinary Medical Association.
When he was not at the clinic, Dr. Freed enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, and dog Maggie, as well as fly fishing, golfing, and traveling. Dr. Freed passed away in his home on June 8, 2021, surrounded by the family he loved and cherished so deeply.
He is dearly missed and will always remain in our hearts and fond memories.

Uno
Our Guardian Angel
Sept 19, 2015 – July 10, 2024
Uno was our one-eyed greeter and highly renowned food critic. You could find her in the lobby trying to do receptionist work or begging for scraps of food, especially if it was cheese! Uno crossed the rainbow bridge surrounded by her Freed family on July 10, 2024. She is greatly missed by all and fondly remembered for all of her crazy antics.
Turbo
Self-Appointed Office Manager
Nov 28, 2011 – Nov 21, 2024
Our first resident freeloader! Turbo was a Self-Appointed Office Manager, most times, Turbo found himself responsible for a staff of 12-14 people, all of whom he taught to drop whatever they were doing to pay attention to him, whenever he demanded it. His interests included chasing the laser light, sitting on the computer while someone types, catnip, supervising chart writing, and offering FREE “Cat” Scans to any in-house patients that he believed needed one done. He never had spare time. Always too busy supervising “personal” staff, though you may have frequently seen him visiting with patients and socializing. It’s thanks to Hampton Animal Control that the staff here at Freed was able to have the greatest Office Manager ever. We aren’t sure what we would have done without Turbo coming here to guide us along on our day-to-day activities.
